Joby Aviation’s Commitment to Sustainable Aviation: Landmark Vertiport Partnership at Century Plaza

by EDI Editorial Staff

Joby Aviation and Reuben Brothers have announced an alliance to establish an air taxi vertiport at Park Elm Residences at Century Plaza in Los Angeles. This landmark step brings zero-emission urban air mobility closer to reality, offering residents of Park Elm the potential to book a Joby air taxi from their building as easily as hailing a car today, for flights across the greater Los Angeles area. This represents sustainable transportation moving from aspiration to adoption.

The distance between Century Plaza and John Wayne Airport in Orange County is approximately 41 miles. In Los Angeles traffic, that drive typically takes one to two hours. Selecting a Joby air taxi for this journey could result in 34 percent lower energy consumption per passenger-mile compared to a standard gasoline automobile, and a 93 percent reduction relative to a traditional gas-fueled helicopter. Given Southern California’s electricity grid mix — which is cleaner than the national average due to the region’s higher share of renewable energy — the potential emissions savings are even greater: 47 percent fewer emissions per passenger-mile than a gas-powered car, and 94 percent fewer than a gas-powered helicopter.

Each flight represents a measurable step toward cleaner cities. However, for Joby, sustainable aviation extends beyond the aircraft to how and where the company builds its products.

In 2025, Joby continued to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of its facilities and factories. The company conducted an energy audit at its most energy-intensive campus and procured its largest amount of renewable electricity to date — part of a three-year effort that has avoided over 5,100 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking approximately 1,200 cars off the road for a full year. Notably, 2025 marks Joby’s lowest-ever emissions intensity by revenue.

More metrics and data will be disclosed in Joby’s 2025 Impact Report, scheduled for release in July 2026. Partnerships such as the one at Century Plaza are meaningful only when supported by a product that delivers on its promise. For Joby, reducing environmental impact — from the aircraft it flies to the facilities it operates — remains central to its mission.
